Jake’s Take
Last time we tried a new place up by me, so this time I went down to her, and we ate at a restaurant called Holties in Barnhart. A small location, and off the side of the road not really near anything of note, it was still packed with folks having both breakfast and lunch. The gravel parking lot was full, and we parked underneath an awning reminiscent of a gas station in the last “spot” we could see. They barely had any places open to eat once inside, but we were still able to find ourselves in a booth at the back of the place. We ordered our food and appetizer all at once, and everything came out extremely quickly too. Holties really has things together!
We got fifteen mini tacos on a platter with salsa served to us for our appetizer, once more diving into an item that we’ve never really had before as a starter. And these were fantastic, the meat was well seasoned and there was enough to fill the tiny, crunchy shells so it wasn’t like we were just eating chips. I liked these a lot and had to keep myself from eating too many of them. But there were fifteen?! Even for “mini tacos”, that was a bit more than I had anticipated. They also offered both sour cream and queso as options, and now I’m wanting to have the meal all over again but with the cheese!
The Bomb Man is the burger I ended up getting. What is that you may ask? It’s an unassuming burger, with onion rings and a little bit of crispy bacon on top (not too much!), and that all served me well. I’m not one for bacon on everything as I’ve attested to before. But here, it was just crispy enough and there wasn’t a lot of it to overpower the sandwich, so I was having a good time. The one other element of the burger I haven’t mentioned just yet is the bomb cheese. It’s a soft cheddar that melts a tad and clumps on the burger in spots, and I wasn’t as big a fan of this part of the meal. It just had a bitter aftertaste that I wasn’t gelling with, though I can see where it would be tasty. Sort of like dark chocolate, there are times when I like it and others where it feels unnecessary, and here I felt it detracted too much from the burger. But it wasn’t abhorrent or anything, didn’t keep me from eating! Just might’ve gotten a different burger had I known.
My Take
This time around, Burger Bounce brought us closer to home, literally.
After our last spot was closer to Jake, this one was near me, a small place in a town just south of me.
The appetizer tacos? The flavor of the meat was incredible! It was well seasoned although they were a bit greasy. This is definitely one of those “enjoy occasionally” moments if you’re mindful of how food makes your body feel. Definitely a weigh loss and lifestyle change reality check. But again, the taste? Absolutely worth mentioning.
For my meal I ordered the Jalapeño Crunch Burger. It was a 1/2 pound patty topped with pepper jack cheese, bacon, and jalapeños. I ended up holding the bacon and I’m glad I did once I saw how thick the burger was. I’ve never been a huge red meat person, even before my weight loss, and now I really listen to how foods sit with me. While the burger itself was thicker than I usually like, the flavor was so good! The jalapeños had a kick, which I loved, and the seasoning was spot on.
My side was sweet potato fries, and honestly? They were just about perfect. They were seasoned well, crispy on the outside, soft but not gooey on the inside. The only downside for me was that everything was truly fried, and afterward my stomach felt heavy. It’s not really a complaint, just an honest observation from someone who has learned to pay attention to how food affects my body.
Overall? The food was very good. Just one of those meals that reminds you why local places often surprise you the most.
The real Burger Bounce moment though, is the time sitting across from my son, trying something new, laughing, talking, and sharing moments that feel ordinary now but won’t always be. That’s the part I love the most.
With love,
Mindy
